Kindles must be well labeled. Scholars are responsible for handling Kindles in a careful manner.

6th grade

Providing a Kindle for your 6th grade scholar is optional however, we highly recommend that 6th grade scholars have a Kindle based on the following:

Scholars without a Kindle will:

  • ·       Be required to have access to core content text on a home computer.
  • ·       Be required to have access to the internet on a daily basis in order to receive/read required class material.
  • ·       Be required to have access to a printer on a daily basis in order to print required class material.

Scholars with a Kindle will continue to:

  • ·       Be able to read core content text on their Kindles.
  • ·       Be able to sync their Kindles and directly receive required class documents/materials.
  • ·       Be able read documents from their Kindles rather than having to print each document.
  • ·       Be required to come to class with a working, charged Kindle each school day.
  • ·       Gain experience in using a Kindle for future success at John Adams Academy.
  • ·       Be responsible for receiving the required materials for all classes.

By making the Kindles optional we are hoping to address the range of scholar needs and responsibility levels.  Please discuss these options with your scholar and make a decision based on which option would be in the best interest of your individual scholar.

7-12th Grades

We are asking each family to purchase an Amazon Kindle for each of their 7th-12th grade scholars.  We believe this will benefit your scholar in building a classical library.

Any work written before 1920 is free to download on the Kindle for example Shakespeare, Newton, Kipling, Plato, etc. Scholars will build a library of classics to discuss with Mentors that they can use whenever and wherever they go.  Some e-books will need to be purchased by the scholars, and those remain on their Kindle. Scholars will not be reimbursed for those purchases as they belong to the scholar’s personal Kindle.

Scholars who Borrow Kindles

Scholars are responsible for any damage done to the Kindle and will be charged for the cost of replacement at the current market value. Kindles will be treated with care (i.e. do not pile other books or materials on the Kindle as it may damage the screen). Scholars must complete and sign a User Agreement Form in order to borrow a Kindle from JAA. Books purchased on JAA Kindles remain the property of John Adams Academy. All borrowed Kindles are due back to the library no later than the last day of school. Report cards will not be issued until the Kindle has been returned.
